AquaticDatabase:List of guidelines
From AquaticDatabase
The following is a list of guidelines or recommended practices for contributors to AquaticDatabase. Do not edit or change these guidelines without discussing your proposal on the talk page first.
[edit] General
- <add general guidelines here>
[edit] Editing
- Correct errors now
- When you see a mistake in an article, fix it. Misspelled words, bad grammar, or a sentence that is hard to understand are all problems that are easy to fix. Please don't ignore an error when you find it. Fix it right now.
[edit] Article Format
- Capitalization
- When choosing a name for an article, use lower case words unless the name is proper. For instance, quarantine tank should be lower case. Common names for specific species should always be considered proper. For example: Magnificent Sea Anemone. Common names for animal groups are considered common. For example: sea anemone.
- A simple test for deciding on capitalization is to name the article the way it would appear when used in the middle of a sentence.
- ex. Sea anemones like the Magnificent Sea Anemone are often hosted by clownfish, like the Black Clown.
- Plural names
- When choosing a name for an article, use the singluar form of the word instead of the plural. This helps make linking to the article more natural. See the code for the sea anemones example here and above.
- Use a starter page
- When creating a new article find an appropriate starter page and copy the code to begin your new article. You may not be able to find a starter page that matches your article content - don't let that stop you from creating a new article.
- Follow the article structure standards
- If you do not understand the AquaticDatabase:Structure standards, please contribute anyway. Just place this {{structure}} tag at the top of the article and another AquaticDatabase user will add the required structure to your article.
- Redirects
- Redirects should be used only when there is only one possible page to redirect to. For example Hepatus aterrimus is taxonomic synonym for Acanthurus achilles only and therefore a redierct would be appropraite in this case. As opposed to the previous example Yellow Tang although a common name for Zebrasoma flavescens could possible be used as a common name for other surgeonfish.
